Psalm 55:1-23

55
Chapter 55
To the director, with stringed music, a maskil, of David. 1 Give ear, O God, to my prayer, and do not hide yourself from my supplication. 2 Give ear to me and answer me; I will moan in my complaint and be terrified. 3 from the voice of an enemy, from the face of the oppression of the wicked, for they cause On to bow down upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. 4 My heart quakes within me, and terrors of death have fallen upon me. 5 Fear and trembling come upon me, and horrors cover me. 6 And I said, "Who would give me wings like a dove? I would fly away and dwell." 7 Look, I would flee far away, wander in the wilderness. Selah. 8 I will hasten to a refuge for me from the tempest wind, from the storm. Selah. 9 Confuse, O Lord, their tongue; divide it, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they go around on its walls, and iniquity and toil are in its midst. 11 Wickedness in its midst, and it does not depart from its breadth; day and night it encircles upon its walls, and North and toil. 12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—then I could bear it; not my hater who has magnified himself against me, then I could hide from him. 13 But you, a man like me, my intimate friend. 14 We who would sweeten counsel together in the house of God would walk in tumult. 15 Let death come upon them; let them go down alive to Sheol, for evils are in their dwelling, in their midst. 16 I will call to the LORD, and the LORD will save me. 17 Evening, morning, and noon I moan and groan, and he hears my voice. 18 He redeemed my soul in peace from those near me, for many were standing against me. 19 God will hear and humiliate them, he who sits enthroned from of old. Selah. They have no changes and do not fear God. 20 He has stretched out his hands against his peace; he has violated his covenant. 21 His butter-mouths and the innards of his heart were smooth; his words were as oil, but they are swords. 22 Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will not give the righteous to totter forever. 23 But you, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction, men of blood and deceit; their days will not be halved, and I trust in you.
